Strange childhood dream – realized

When I was little my parents divorced and I would spend every summer for at least a month with my dad at the family cottage. There was always plenty of room and bunk beds so it could be any one of my uncles there with their kids as well. The cottage had few rules and they were always abided most of the time. Rule #1 Stay out of grammie’s garden – Rule #2 We had to wear lifejackets if we went in the boat – Rule #3 Stay out of the cottage unless it’s raining. So all summer we’d run around catching toads, making mud castles, swimming, fishing, swimming, playing hide and go seek, swimming, playing tag and rowing around in the little dinghy. I really miss the cottage and having those summers of childhood bliss and innocence but though I am no longer a child I carry memories and habits from those summers.

The cottage had this great porch and the entire one side of it was covered in sliding glass doors at least three or four of them that let in a lot of light but also made the living room the best place to watch thunderstorms. I’ve never been afraid of them – I just love the awesome power and beauty of the dramatic clouds, flashes of light and crashes. I have always (long before making this my profession) wanted to capture photos of lighting and be like storm chaser. This past Monday I kinda got my wish – coming home from a shoot at Rockwood I came up a hill and saw the storm clouds gathering and of course got excited – and then I saw a crazy flash of thick lighting and realized that I could see the storm and the lighting from where I was but there was no rain yet. So I whipped out my camera and set up the tripod – Dozens of flashes were passing me by but still no lightning in my shots – I heard a loud rumble and set my timer for a 15 second exposure to try and capture it and FLASH – I GOT IT!!!! A great strong bolt right out of the clouds – I jumped around like a little kid screaming yes! and I’m sure I caused some funny looks from the drivers but I was just so excited! Im sure that if I had read up on how to capture it everything would be sharp and perfect but these photos are perfect to me – they are a dream realized and encouragement embodied in the wonderful power of nature. Check em out . . .

Yes that’s water on my filter!

Rushing life . . .

Monday inspirational song lyrics

I am constantly rushing myself and being impulsive in life – I want to get the best of everything as fast as possible and I am always left looking for the next thing. The other day I heard a song by Alannis Morrisette that really moved me – It talks about the joy in being incomplete and enjoying the journey. This is a goal for myself to start enjoying where I am now and the process to get to where I want to be.

Incomplete – Alannis Morrissette

One day I’ll find relief
I’ll be arrived and I’ll be a friend to my friends who know how to be friends

One day I’ll be at peace
I’ll be enlightened and I’ll be married with children and maybe adopt

One day I will be healed
I will gather my wounds forge the end of tragic comedy

I have been running so sweaty my whole life
Urgent for a finish line
And I have been missing the rapture this whole time
Of being forever incomplete

One day, my mind will retreat, and I’ll know god and I’ll be constantly one with her night dusk and day
One day I’ll be secure, like the women I see on their 30th anniversaries

I have been running so sweaty my whole life
Urgent for a finish line
And I have been missing the rapture this whole time
Of being forever incomplete

Ever unfolding
Ever expanding
Ever adventurous and torturous
But never done

One day, I will speak freely
I’ll be less afraid
And measured outside of my poems and lyrics and art
One day I will be faith-filled
I’ll be trusting and spacious authentic and grounded and whole

I have been running so sweaty my whole life
Urgent for a finish line
And I have been missing the rapture this whole time
Of being forever incomplete

Sarah + Des = Married!

Yesterday, Bryan and I shot a wedding in the lovely and picturesque town of Erin. Driving down the switchback to Sarah’s parents house where the ceremony was to be held we looked at each other with excitement – looking at the surroundings and the gorgeous weather we knew it would be a beautiful day. What I didn’t expect was to feel like I was transported back in time about 50 years. Sarah & Des’ wedding was infused with a lot of personal touches and a very vintage feel. Here is what I love about them . . .

1. That there was never a need to ask these two to kiss – i think it was almost to the point of asking them to stop kissing!

2. That they have an adorable son named Lucas (also Sarah’s maiden name) who has these great big blue eyes that was included in the day.

3. That everything was outside – the ceremony was at Sarah’s parents house and the reception under a tent at Des’ families property.

4. That as vintage and gorgeous as this wedding was – these two were still a barrel of laughs and completely down to earth.

5. ” Hi my name is Janet Reno . . . ” Ummm so that might sound like something weird to add as something that I love but this part of the list is going to expand to include Sarah’s funny and warm maid of honour – Cathy, aka Janet Reno. If you are a fan of SNL you might remember some sketches with Will Ferrell pretending to be Janet Reno – they were ridiculously funny and apparently something that Sarah and Cathy used to watch and imitate together. So throughout the whole wedding day when Sarah (or Cathy really) needed a laugh they would take off on some quote ie – ” Hi my name is Janet Reno and I am reporting from the battlefield but shhhhhhhhhhhhh it’s really my basement . . .”  Perhaps the more touching part of this story that really makes me love the friendship between them is that when Cathy started her speech during the reception and was trying to stem the flow of tears that was overcoming her and making it difficult for her to speak – Sarah ran up and said . . . . (come on say it with me) “Hi my name is Janet Reno …”  making not only the crowd laugh but also Cathy – and then stood by her for the rest of the speech.

Ok so I could list so much more but I’d really just love to show you some of the photos – Two warnings – 1) There is a lot of black and white – with the vintage feel I just couldn’t help myself and 2) There are ALOT of photos :)

Enjoy!

A few snippets of the backyard and the gazebo under which they were married

Sarah’s dress – shoes and perfume

This is (Im pretty sure as they have two pups that look the same) Georgie – This puppy was so cute but so overwhelmed with all of the people and excitement it kept running around in circles!

Cathy aka Janet Reno – doing her makeup

Sarah doing her makeup in her mother’s mirror (loved the setup)

Des – with little Lucas while Sarah was getting ready

and the dress goes on . . .

These photos are a few we took of Sarah on her own while waiting for everyone to be seated

Sarah walking out of the house to go down the “aisle” with her father

Exchanging of vows

Sarah with little Lucas just after the ceremony

The happily married couple and their wedding party

In the vintage Ford that they rode in to the reception

One last photo outside at sunset!

First dance

Thanks again to Sarah & Des for including Bryan and I in your day – We had a great time and wish you the best on your honeymoon! See you when you get back!

Off to Guelph & surrounding areas . . .

Bryan and I are off to Erin this weekend (just outside of Guelph) to shoot Sarah & Des’s wedding. We are both very excited and looking forward to this outdoor ceremony (weather please hold up!) on Sarah’s parents property in Erin – photos will be done around the forks of the Credit (hoping to get to the waterfall – check it out http://gallery.photo.net/photo/6052603-lg.jpg )  so as this is the first wedding this year where pretty much everything is out doors I’m hoping my luck with rain will hold. It seems like every wedding I’ve done on weekends where it has rained – the rain has subsided exactly when we planned to do the formals. It’s also created some great clouds as backdrops! In any case this weekend should be a good time and then on Sunday we have a trash the dress session with Colleen – Jochen and some surprised guests and then on Monday I have a family photo session at Rockwood! Lots of shooting and hopefully great weather – wish us luck!

Shooting People . . .

A few weeks ago Bryan and I both attended the “I shoot people” seminar with JB & DeEtte Sallee of Sallee Photography. Let me just say that these guys are down to earth. We stayed after the seminar and had a few drinks with them and talked honestly about photography, that Canada doesn’t have cheerleaders (at least not the same as the US), about Borat and funny stories from the field. It was nice to find two people that have made it as a successful husband and wife team – who speak plainly about some of the harsh realities of being in the business. They had great advice for dealing with copy cats and fellow competitors undercutting you as well as a great album design solution. Bryan and I left the seminar smiling and full of ideas and possibilities for where our business could go. Do you hear me saying we alot??? That’s because Bryan will be taking a more active role in the business and helping me with some of the aspects of running a business that are not my strong suit!

In addition to that Bryan now has his own gear (he was just borrowing mine before) and his own bag – which I have to say he is pretty protective of. We both just purchased D300′s and Bryan has the 17-55 2.8 lens as well as a 70-300 lens (for now – I think this one has his eye on the 70-200 VR for Xmas) and a flash.

Bryan’s skill has grown so much over the last season and one day (very very soon) I’m pretty sure he’ll give me a run for my money! JB & DeEtte tapped into a truth that I don’t think we had realized up until that point – Just how powerful it is to shoot as a couple. Your emotions are in tune and you know how to communicate (hopefully ;) well. I know there are times at weddings where I have needed stuff and Bryan has raced across the room with it because he tell by my face that I needed something. I can’t train that kind of link with any other assistant (well maybe Sam is the exception since we are practically married anyways) and it’s definitely something I will be building on in the future! Who knows maybe one day it won’t be Amanda Lachapelle photography but just Lachapelle photography! In any case the night chatting and getting new ideas was invaluable and JB & DeEtte – Bryan and I can’t thank you enough for such a great time! (Even if it was hard to get up at 8am after getting home at 2am) See you at WPPI 2009!
